Bear was recently announced as the composer for ABC’s highly-anticipated Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a project that will allow him to collaborate with the visionary Joss Whedon on the first foray into television for the blockbuster Marvel cinematic universe. Bear’s many other credits include AMC’s record-shattering global phenomenon The Walking Dead, on which he worked with writer / director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator). McCreary recently collaborated with David S. Goyer (co-writer of The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel) to score his epic historical fantasy Da Vinci’s Demons, a series that debuted to the highest ratings in STARZ’s history. Bear will return to STARZ in 2014, scoring their ambitious pirate drama Black Sails, for executive producer Michael Bay.
Bear’s swashbuckling score for Human Target featured the largest orchestra ever assembled in the history of series television, and earned him his first Emmy nomination. Bear has also composed evocative scores for series such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Eureka, Caprica, Trauma, The Cape and the videogame / television hybrid Defiance. His feature film work includes the critically-acclaimed Europa Report (2013, starring Sharlto Copley), Knights of Badassom (2013, starring Peter Dinklange and Steve Zahn) and Disney’s worldwide hit Step Up 3D. His videogame credits include Sony’s successful SOCOM 4: U.S. NAVY SEALs and CAPCOM’s Dark Void.
Bear has performed his music in concert before thousands of fans from around the world. He has conducted orchestral performances of his music in North America and Europe, and has been invited to conduct at film music festivals such as Fimucité in Tenerife, and the International Film Music Festival in Úbeda, Spain.
Attending the prestigious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, Bear completed degrees in composition and recording arts. However, his professional training came from film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mocking Bird). Bear was one of Bernstein’s select protégés, and learned the tools of the trade working with and orchestrating for the maestro. Bear spent his childhood immersed in film and television music; he is delighted now to contribute to the genres that inspired him.
